W. D. HARRIS DEAD

W. D. Harris was born in Holt county, Missouri, January 24, 1849, and died at his home at North Bedford, October 11, 1907, aged 58 years, 8 months and 17 days.  In 1865 he moved to Taylor county, which has ever since been his home.  On February 28, 1877, he was united in marriage to Laura F. Turner, at New Market.  To this happy union five children were born, all of whom are living.  They are Elva Harris, Kennewick, Wash.; Mrs. Ola M. McCloy, Shenandoah, Iowa; Perle, Georgia and Gail, at home.  Deceased also leaves two brothers, J.S.[John Sexton] Harris, of New Market, and C. L.[Christopher Lester] Harris, of Coin, and a sister, Mrs. Alice Holiday, of Grandview, Iowa.

Mr. Harris united with the Baptist church early in life, remaining a faithful and consistent member to the day of his death.  While living at New Market he engaged for a number of years in teaching school.  He farmed in Dallas township and also in Clayton township.  Last spring he was a candidate for the republican nomination for county auditor and has always taken an active interest in republican politics of the county and his advice and experience was always found good.  Last spring he bought a home in North Bedford to which he moved and where he expected to live a life of comparative ease.  As a husband he was kind and affectionate; as a father indulgent and as a neighbor and friend, staunch and true.  As he leaves a heart broken wife and children, brothers and sister to mourn his untimely death, the community expresses to them their deepest sympathy.

About three weeks ago he injured his knee with an axe, and while it had not kept him bedfast he had not been feeling very well.  On Friday evening his wife was dressing the slight wound for him and he complained then of feeling very bad.  He was put to bed and in a few moments the spirit had flown.

A short funeral service was held Monday morning at 8:30 at the home and the remains were taken to New Market, where the funeral services were held, conducted by Rev. A. I. Jones, and interment was in Old Memory cemetery.

A SUDDEN DEATH

W. D. Harris died suddenly at his home in Bedford, on Friday evening, Oct. 11.  For some days he had not been well, but no one had any idea his condition was serious, and his death was a sad and sorrowful shock to his friends and loved ones.

Short funeral services were held at the home at 8:30 Monday morning, after which the body was taken to New Market where the funeral sermon was preached by the pastor at 1 p.m.  Interment was made at Old Memory cemetery.

The deceased was born in Holt county, Missouri, January 24, 1849, and he resided there until 1865, when he came to Bedford.  On February 28, 1877, deceased was united in marriage to Miss Laura T (sic "F"). Turner.  To this union five daughters were born, all of whom, together with their mother, survive him.  The daughters are: Miss Elva, Kennewick, Washington; Mrs. Ola M. McCoy, Shenandoah; Misses Perle, Georgia and Gale [Gayle], who reside at home.

A brother of the deceased, C. L. Harris, resides at Coin, and a sister, Mr. Alice Holiday, at Grandview, Iowa.

In early life Mr. Harris joined the Baptist church, to which faith he steadfastly adhered during all his life.  He was a man of noble character, honest and honorable, and one whom the community can ill afford to spare.  His bereaved wife and children have the most sincere sympathy of all.

FORMER RESIDENT OF BEDFORD DIES

Mrs. W. D. Harris, 77, a former resident of Bedford, died in a Kansas City hospital Sunday.  Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in New Market Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E. B. Osborne and assisted by Rev. E. K. Shackleford.  Burial was in the Memory cemetery.

Mrs. Harris, who before her marriage was Laura Turner, was born at Martinsdale, OH, March 22, 1856, and was the sixth of a family of eight children.  The family moved to Taylor county when she was a small child and she spent the greater part of her life here.

She was married to William D. Harris February 23, 1877.  Mr. Harris died in 1907.  Surviving are the five daughters, Elva, who is now Mrs. T. J. Wright, Seattle, Wash., Ola, now Mrs. C. W. McCloy of Yakima, Wash., Pearl, now Mrs. L. D. McMaster of Middleport, Ohio; Miss Georgia Harris of Arlington, Wash., and Gayle, now Mrs. Roy W. Hoover, of Kansas City, Mo.  There are also seven grandchildren. 

All of the daughters except Miss Georgia Harris were with their mother during her last illness.  Mrs. Harris had been a member of the Baptist church for many years.

Mrs. Laura Harris of Kansas City, formerly of this place, passed away Sunday, April 30, at the St. Luke hospital in Kansas City.  the funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the Baptist Church, Rev. E. B. Osborn conducting the funeral.  Hr daughters, Mrs. Elva Wright of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Ola McCloy of Yakima, Wash., Mrs. Pearl McMasters of Middleport, Ohio., and Mrs. Roy Hoover of Kansas City were all with her at the time of her decease.  One daughter, Miss Georgia Harris of Arlington, Wash., was unable to be with her.  Laura Turner was born at Martinsville, Ohio, March 22, 1856, the sixth of a family of eight children.  When a small child, her family came to Taylor county, Iowa, where a large part of her life was spent.  On Feb. 28, 1877, she was married to William D. Harris, who preceded her in death in 1907.  Both Mr. and Mrs. Harris for many years were members of the New Market Baptist church.  Mrs. Harris is survived by five daughters, Mrs. T. J. [Elva] Wright of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. C. W. [Ola] McCloy of Yakima, Wash., Mrs. L. D. [Perle] McMasters of Middleport, O., Miss Georgia Harris of Arlington, Wash., Mrs. R. W. [Gayle] Hoover of Kansas City, Mo.  There are also seven grandchildren.  All the daughters except Miss Georgia Harris were with Mrs. Harris during her last illness and were present at the funeral.

Mrs. Ola McCloy, 74, died last night in Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.  Born in New Market, Iowa, she had lived in Yakima the past forty-five years, making her home at 418 S. 15th Avenue.  She was a member of the First Christian Church of Yakima.  Mrs. McCloy was a past matron of the Syringa chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Yakima Women's Club.  She is survived by her husband, C. W. McCloy, a daughter, Mrs. Maxine Moore of Yakima, one granddaughter, Miss Anita Moore, and three sisters, Mrs. T. J. [Elva] Wright and Miss Georgia Harris, both of Seattle, and Mrs. Gayle Hoover of Kansas City, MO.

John Sexton Harris

John Sexton Harris, son of Mr. and Mrs. John P. [Jonathan Preston] Harris, was born in Holt County, MO, January 06, 1854, and departed this life July 22, 1926, at the age of 72 years, 6 months and 16 days.

When but a small boy he came to this community where he has resided ever since.  He was united in marriage to Emma Louise Kelso February 28, 1877.  To this union six children were born, one dying in infancy and the remaining five were all present at the bedside of their father when he passed away.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife and five children, Mrs. Ona Denney of Shambaugh, Mrs. Lenna Martin of Carroll, Eldon of New Market, Oren of Rialto, CA and Herschel of New Market; also six grandchildren.  All of his brothers and sisters preceded him in death except one sister, Mrs. Alice Holliday (sic HOLIDAY) [aka Tabitha] of Chickasaw, AL.  Many other relatives and friends are left to mourn the passing of a kind father and faithful friend and neighbor.

The deceased was a member of the Masonic order and the I.O.O.F. lodge.  The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the late home, conducted by Re. James Wilkins, pastor of the Methodist church, and interment was in the Old Memory cemetery.

MRS. EMMA HARRIS DIES AT HOME IN NEW MARKET

New Market (Special) - Mrs. Emma Louisa Harris, aged 83, died at 2:00 Tuesday afternoon at the home of her son, Herschel Harris, at the edge of New Market.  She leaves two daughters: Mrs. J. W. Denney [Ona] of Coin and Mrs. E. W. Martin [Lenna] of Carroll, Iowa, also two others sons, Oren Harris of San Bernardino, Calif, and Eldon of New Market, a brother, H. B. Kelso [Herschel B], of New Market, eight grandchildren, and one great grandson.  She has spent most of her entire life in and around New Market vicinity, locating at Memory community in her early years.

Funeral was held at the home Thursday afternoon, at 2 o'clock the Rev. L. E. Gatch in charge.  Mrs. Martin was with her mother at the time of her death.  Oren will be unable to come for the funeral.

LAST RITES MONDAY FOR ONA DENNEY, 81

Funeral services were conducted here this Monday for Mrs. Ona Harris Denney, 81, who died Friday at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital where she had been a patient for the past three weeks.  She was the widow of the late J. W.[James William] Denney, who died in January of 1959.

Mrs. Denney was born on July 05, 1879, in Taylor County, Iowa, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John [Sexton]Harris.  Before moving to Clarinda, the family home had been at New Market, Shambaugh and Coin.  Mrs. Denney was a member of the Clarinda Methodist Church.

The funeral service was held at the Williams-Foster Mortuary, the Rev. Clarence Moore officiating.  Interment was in Old Memory Cemetery.  The pallbearers were Oliver Gregory, Clarence Carr, Ralph Baylis, Floyd Clayton, Glen Taylor and Roy Johnson.  The flowers were cared for by Mrs. Oliver Gregory and Mrs. Clarence Carr.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Lenna Martin of Carroll, Iowa; and three brothers, Eldon Harris of New Market, Oren Harris of Rialto, CA and Herschel Harris of Zepher Hills, Florida.

SERVICES TUESDAY FOR JAMES DENNEY

Former bank branch manager death at hospital Sunday, January 11, 1959.

James W. Denney, 86, died early Sunday morning at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital, where he had been a patient for the past 2-1/2 weeks.  He had been in poor health for the last two years.

Before his retirement Mr. Denney had been a banker with the Page County State Bank of Clarinda.  He had managed the branch bank at Coin and before that was in the banks at Shambaugh and New Market. The couple moved to Clarinda five years ago.

Mr. Denney was born on January 02, 1873, in Jasper County, Mo, near Carthage.  In the spring of 1873 the family moved to Maloy, Ia, and he had lived in southwest Iowa since.  In 1903 Mr. Denney was married to Ona Harris and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1953.  Mr. Denney was a member of the First Methodist Church in Clarinda and had formerly been a member of the Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife here: two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Imus of Opportunity, Wash, and Mrs. Fannie Higgs of Colorado Springs, Colo: and one brother, Clyde of Mountain Grove, Calif.

The funeral service will be held at the Foster-Williams Mortuary Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Rev. David Ash, pastor of the First Methodist Church, will officiate.  Interment will be in Old Memory Cemetery near New Market.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home, Carroll for Mrs. Lenna L. Martin, 93, of Carroll.  Mrs. Martin, widow of Dr. Earl W. Martin, died Wednesday morning at the St. Anthony Nursing Home, Carroll.

Surviving are one son, Dr. John E.[Earl] Martin of Carroll; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Neisler of Van Nuys, Calif. and Mrs. Russell (Dorothy) Stokkey of Aptos, Calif.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. E. W. (Lenna) Martin, 93, of Carroll, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home, Carroll, with the Rev. Ernest Larson of the First United Methodist Church officiating.  Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home, Carroll, after 1 p.m. Friday.  An Eastern Star Memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Martin, the former Lenna Louisa Harris, was born on April 22, 1883 at New Market in Taylor County.  She taught school in Taylor County before her marriage.  Her marriage to Dr. Earl W. Martin took place in Villisca, Iowa, in November 1914.  They had made their home in Carroll since 1919.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women; a 50-year member of the Signet Chapter No. 1 Order of Eastern Star; a lifelong member of the American Legion Auxiliary and lifetime member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Iowa Optometric Assn. and the American Optometric Assn.  Mrs. Martin served for many years on the Advisory Board of the Order of Rainbow for Girls.

Her husband, Dr. E. W. Martin, a pioneer Carroll optometrist, died in 1957.

Mrs. Martin died Wednesday at St. Anthony Nursing Home.  She had been in ill health since suffering a stroke in February, 1960.  She formerly resided at 1302 N. Adams St., Carroll.

Skip Raridon sang "Abide with Me: and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" accompanied by Mrs. Don Severin, organist.

Pallbearers were Roger Haynes, Arthur A. Neu, Ted N. Krogh, Jerry Rolfes, Wilbert L. Reitz, and Gerald D. Pringle.  Honorary pallbearers were Clyde Bayliss, V. Stuart Perry, Dr. James M. Tierney, Lester W. Wilke, Dr. Guy S. Jones, Ralph D. McCord and Frank J. Kloser.  Burial was in the Carroll City Cemetery under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home.

Mrs. Martin died Wednesday at St. Anthony Nursing Home, Carroll.

Dr. E. W. Martin, 70, Carroll, a veteran optometrist, died unexpectedly of a heart attack at his home, 1515 North Adams Street, at 10:45 Friday morning.

The body is at the Huffman Funeral Home awaiting completion of arrangements.

Dr. Martin's survivors include his wife, a son, Dr. John E Martin, associated with him in the practice of optometry, and two daughters: Mrs. C. H. (Margaret) Neisler, Van Nuys, Calif., and Mrs. R. L. (Dorothy) Stokke, Sunnyvale, Calif.

Dr. Martin was a past president of Iowa Optometric Association and past member of the Iowa Optometry Examiners.  He had been engaged in his profession here since 1919.

He was an active member of the Methodist Church and Masonic organizations.

Dr. Martin had been in failing health for some time.

DR. E. W. MARTIN

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Huffman Funeral Home for Dr. E. W. Martin, 70, Carroll's veteran optometrist, who died unexpectedly of a coronary heart attack at his home at 10:45 Friday morning.

The Rev C. Hugo Orf, minister of the Methodist Church, will officiate.  The Masonic service will be given.

Burial will be in the Carroll Cemetery with members of Maurice Dunn Post No 7 American Legion, conducting military rites.

Dr. Martin had practiced optometry here since moving to Carroll from Council Bluffs April 27, 1919.  He had held high offices in the profession, having served as president of the Iowa Optometric Association in 1946 and 1947 and secretary of the Iowa Board of Examiners from 1926 to 1932.  On April 17, 1950, Dr. Martin was honored with a life membership in the Iowa Optometric Association in recognition of long and meritorious service in the advancement of the profession of optometry in Iowa.

He served many years as chairman of the Southwest Zone of the Iowa Optometric Association and had attended many national conventions.  He had also worked with the International Board of Examiners.

Dr. Martin was married Nov 10, 1914, to Lenna Harris at Villisca, Iowa.

Surviving with Mrs. Martin are a son, Dr. John E. Martin, who has been associated with his father for a number of years and will continue the practice, two daughters, Mrs. C. H. (Margaret) Neisler, Van Nuys, Calif. and Mrs. R. L. (Dorothy) Stokke, Sunnyvale, Calif: eight grandchildren, Ruth and Lois Martin, Lynn, Ann, Charles and John Neisler and Patricia and Linda Stokke; one sister, Mrs. S. A. [Olive] Wier, Bedford, and three brothers: Ernest Martin, Macksburg; Floyd Martin, Paradise, Calif. and the Rev. Fred Martin, Hastings.

His parents, Charles R (sic) [B] and Anna S Martin, preceded him in death.

Earl W. Martin was born Oct 5, 1886, at Bedford, Ia., and was reared on his parents farm.  After his graduation from high school at Afton in 1908, he took a special course in watchmaking at the Bradley Polytechnic School in Peoria, Ill.

He then enlisted in the United States Marines, visiting many important ports of the world during his four years of service.  His command was sent to Nicaragua during one of the periodical uprisings there and was under fire for three days.

After his discharge from the service, he returned to Iowa and bought a jewelry store at New Market, conducting that business four years. 

On the entry of the United States into World War I he sold the store and enlisted, entering officers' training school at Fort Snelling, Minn., August 27, 1917. He was commissioned a lieutenant Nov. 17.  On Jan 11, 1918, he sailed from New York for France where he was in charge of the operations office of the Air Force.  After his return to the States at the close of the war, he was honorably discharged at Camp Dix, NJ. 

Dr. Martin returned to New Market going from there to Chicago, where he took a special course in the Northern Illinois College of Optometry, from which he was graduated June 14, 1919.  He then located in Council Bluffs, where he was engaged in the practice for about five months.

Coming to Carroll in April, 1919, he opened offices in the Walz building on North Adams Street.  Two years later, he moved into his present offices in the Masonic temple.

Dr. Martin, a member of the First Methodist Church, was serving on the official board at the time of his death.

He was currently treasurer of Signet Lodge No. 264 A. F. and A. M.  He was also a member of Copestone Chapter No. 78 where he was past secretary,  and the Signet Chapter No. 1, Order of the Eastern Star.

MRS. ELDON HARRIS SERVICES MONDAY

Mrs. Eldon (Bessie M) Harris, 76, died at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, [July 1]shortly after her admission to the hospital.  She has been in failing health for the past several years.

The daughter of the late John Randolph and Mary Etta Manley Clayton, she was born on a farm near Siam, and has spent her entire lifetime in the New Market-Siam community.  The Harris home at the present time is a mile and a half southwest of New Market.

She is survived by her husband, Eldon Harris, one daughter, Mrs. Edward (Lucille) Mutti, Hopkins, Mo, two brothers, John Clayton, Villisca and Virgil Clayton, Hepburn and one sister, Mrs. Ollie Johnson, Hopkins, Mo.

Funeral services were conducted from the Walker Funeral Home this Monday afternoon, with Rev. Lester Greenwood in charge.  Soloist was Mrs. Margaret Grossman, and organist was Mrs. Aletha L. Hutchings.  Floral committee was Mrs. Alvin Brummett, Mrs. Ruth McKay, Mrs. Hollie Clark, Mrs. Orville Slaight, and Doris Clutter.

Casket bearers were Elbert Borden, Ralph Borden, Dale Hartstack, Pat Yearous, Carroll McKay, and Duane Brown.  Burial was in Memory cemetery at New Market.

Lucille Mutti, 94, Kansas City, MO, died Monday, September 20, 2004, at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, MO. She was born August 13, 1910, in Rural Page County, IA, to the late John [Eldon] Harris and Bessie (Clayton) Harris. She graduated in 1928 from New Market High School and received her BS in Elementary Education from Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, in 1961. On November 25, 1937, she was married to John Edward Mutti in Garnet, KS. Mrs. Mutti was a retired teacher with the St. Joseph, MO, school district. She also had taught school in rural schools in Iowa and Missouri. She was a member of Wray Memorial United Methodist Church, Chapter K.P.E.O. and Rosanna Chapter Order of Eastern Star, Hopkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Edward Mutti, and her parents. She is survived by two sons, John Edward Mutti, Jr., North Kansas City, MO, and Dr. James Harris Mutti, Kansas City, MO; three grandchildren, Mrs. Diane Mutti Burke, Kansas City, MO, James Harris Mutti, Jr., Peoria, IL, and John M. Mutti, Kansas City, MO; and five great-grandchildren. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Lucille Mutti, 94, Kansas City, formerly St. Joseph and Hopkins, Mo., died Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Mo.

She was born Aug. 13, 1910, in Rural Page County, Iowa, to the late John [Eldon] Harris and Bessie (Clayton) Harris.

She graduated in 1928 from New Market High School and received her B.S. in elementary education from Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, Mo., in 1961.

On Nov. 25, 1937, she was married to John Edward Mutti in Garnet, Kan.

Mrs. Mutti was a retired teacher with the St. Joseph, Mo., School District. She also had taught school in rural schools in Iowa and Missouri.

She was a member of Wray Memorial United Methodist Church, Chapter K of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and Rosanna chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Hopkins, Mo.

She was preceded in death by husband, John Edward Mutti; and her parents.

She is survived by two sons, John Edward Mutti Jr., North Kansas City; and Dr. James Harris Mutti, Kansas City; three grandchildren, Mrs. Diane Mutti Burke, Kansas City; James Harris Mutti Jr., Peoria, Ill.; and John M. Mutti, Kansas City; and five great-grandchildren.

Service: Saturday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m., Wray Memorial United Methodist, Hopkins. Burial: Hopkins Cemetery. Visitation: Sept. 25 from 1 to 2 p.m., at the church. Memorials: Wray Memorial United Methodist Church, Hopkins Cemetery or Hopkins Historical Society. Arrangements are under the direction of Price Funeral Home, Maryville.

"Rod" Vickery Dies in St. Joseph Hospital [January 5, 1927]

Pioneer Resident.  He Served as Sheriff Several Years.

Word was received in Bedford this morning announcing the death last evening of "Rod" Vickery of New Market who was at the St. Joseph M. E. hospital for treatment.  Mr. Vickery was well known in Taylor county having served as sheriff for several years.  The Times-Republican is informed the body will be received at Bedford and that funeral services will be held at the Wetmore Funeral Parlors tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 2:30.  Interment will be made in Fairview Cemetery.  Mr. Vickery was aged 80 years, 9 months and 3 days.

Mrs. Jennie Vickery

Mrs. Jennie Vickery of New Market died last Friday night in the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. W. Campbell, in Rock Island, Ill.  Funeral services were held in the Wetmore Funeral Home, Monday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. C. F. Smith, pastor of the Methodist church in New Market.  Bedford chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, had charge of the ceremony in Fairview cemetery. 

Jennie Barnard was born in Vermillion county, Indiana, Aug. 10, 1848.  She was reared at Rio, Knox County, Ill., and there was married to Roger E. Vickery, Mar. 14, 1872.  They resided at Elmwood, Ill., until 1881, when they moved to a farm in Dallas township in this county.  They moved to Bedford when Mr. Vickery was elected sheriff 35 years ago, and returned to the farm in 1909.  During the last two years Mrs. Vickery had been a resident of New Market.  Mr. Vickery died January 05, 1927.  Surviving are Roy E. Vickery of Grand Junction, Colo., son; Mrs. Nell Waterman, who came from Minneapolis three years ago to remain with her parents, Mrs. Ralph Burgess of Minneapolis, Mrs. M. W. Campbell of Rock Island, and Mrs. Oren Harris of San Bernardino, Calif, daughters.  There are six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Mrs. Vickery was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was active in work of the Woman's Relief Corps,  Mr. Vickery having served in the Civil war in the Peoria battery of Illinois artillery.

No services were conducted for Sun City resident, Ferne Hazel Harris, 94.  Private interment was conducted at Montecito Memorial Park in San Bernardino.

Born October 07, 1893, in Bedford, Iowa, Mrs. Harris died October 27 at her Sun City residence.  She had been a Sun City resident for twenty-four years.  Before retirement, she had been a bookkeeper for 30 years with The Rialto Orange Co.

Mrs. Harris is survived by a daughter, Marjorie Rawlinson of Sun City; a son Jack Harris of Los Altos Hills and five grandchildren.

OBITUARY RECORD - C. L. Harris

C. L. Harris, known as "Kit" Harris, formerly of Shambaugh and Coin, Page county, and of New Market, Taylor county died Saturday, March 6, 1915, at Burbank, Calif., as the result of an accident received the day previous while he was working in a gravel pit, the particulars of which accident had not been received in Clarinda up to Tuesday of this week.  When in Page county he followed the occupation of a well digger and a worker with cement.  He was a very industrious man.  He was a native of Polk county, MO where he was born February 21, 1858.  He came with his parents to Iowa in 1865 and grew to manhood in Page and Taylor counties.  He wedded Miss Cornelia Cavender in 1880.  Eight children were born to them.  His wife died in 1901.  The following children survive: Carl Harris and Frank Harris of Clarinda, Lester Harris of New Market, Mrs. J. M. Brody, formerly Miss Maude Harris, Canton, S.D.; Mrs. Harry Lockhart, Canton, S.D., and Miss Marie Harris, Burbank, Calif.  He is also survived by a brother, J. S.[John Sexton] Harris of New Market, and a sister, Mrs. Alice Holiday of Grandview.  Besides his relatives he leaves a host of friends to mourn their loss.  The remains were buried at Burbank, Calif., March 10.

Frank Harris Area Native

Frank Harris, 89, a native of Taylor County, died Sept. 29 at the Pleasant Meadows Christian Village Care Center in Chrisman, Il.

He was born in Taylor County and lived in Red Oak and Shenandoah before moving to Council Bluffs in 1943.  In 1979, he and his wife moved to Chrisman to be near one of their daughters.

He was retired from Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1958 after 42 years of service.  He and his wife celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary Sept. 17.

He is survived by his wife, Florence; one son, Alvin of Pleasant Hill, Ca; three daughters, Arline Saez of Alexandria, VA; Dorothy Lawrence of Arlington, VA and Iola Irwin of Ludlow, IL; and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Oct. 1 in Council Bluffs.  Graveside services and interment were at the Clarinda cemetery.

Jim McDonald was vet postal carrier

New Market (Special) - James O McDonald, 82, who served rural New Market postal patrons for many years died at the home here Thursday at 11:35 a.m.[November 11, 1965]  He had been in ill health for 13 years and bedfast during recent years.

Memorial service was held at the Church of Christ Saturday with Pastor Glen Mitchell in charge, and burial was in Memory cemetery.  Mrs. Dean Moore sang for the service.  Casket bearers were Harvey Young, Estel Combs, Orville Wood, John Combs, Verlin Larson and LaVoy Eighmy.

Mr. McDonald was born in Taylor county October 30, 1883, the son of James and Margaret Harris McDonald and was life-long resident.  For many years he drove for the late Dr. McColm, and made his home with the McColms.  He started as a mail carrier in June 1919 and retired November 30, 1946.  His wife, the former Opal Wallace, to whom he was married June 22, 1950, served as assistant postmaster until her retirement a few years ago.

His wife continues to live at the home here.  His sister, Mrs. Alice Bamborough of Los Angeles, California, was unable to come for the service because of hip fracture.  His death came on the birthday of the sister.  He was member of the Masonic Lodge.
